Authors to speak in Charlottesville in October
Charlottesville, VA — Today, Virginia Humanities, the state humanities council, announced the details of two back-to-back literary events featuring authors Amor Towles and Aran Shetterly. Both events will take place in Charlottesville this October.
On October 15th, Virginia Humanities’ Virginia Center for the Book will host acclaimed historian Aran Shetterly for the launch of his new book, MORNINGSIDE: The 1979 Greensboro Massacre and the Struggle for an American City's Soul at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center. In 2018, Shetterly conducted research for the book as part of a Virginia Humanities residential fellowship. Shetterly will be in conversation with the Jefferson School’s executive director, Andrea Douglas, exploring themes of justice, activism, and community resilience. A brief audience Q&A and book signing will follow the discussion.
The following evening, October 16, 2024, bestselling author Amor Towles will join University of Virginia President Jim Ryan for a conversation at the Paramount Theater. Celebrated for his sharp and lavish literary fiction, Towles’ work has been widely acclaimed since the release of his breakout novel, Rules of Civility. His second novel, A Gentleman in Moscow, spent 59 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list before being adapted for a television series starring Ewan McGregor. Amazon selected his third novel The Lincoln Highway as the Best Book of 2021, and his most recent short fiction collection, Table for Two became an immediate bestseller. Cohosted by Virginia Humanities and the University of Virginia, this free event is made possible through the generous support of Brown Advisory. Tickets must be reserved through the Paramount Theater's website.

About Virginia Humanities
Virginia Humanities is the state humanities council. We’re headquartered in Charlottesville at the University of Virginia, but we serve the entire state. We aim to share the stories of all Virginians—or, better yet, find ways for people to share their own stories. We want Virginians to connect with their history and culture and, in doing that, we hope we’ll all get to know each other a little better. Founded in 1974, we are one of fifty-six humanities councils created by Congress with money and support from the National Endowment for the Humanities to make the humanities available to all Americans.
