From Virginia Humanities at UVA Wise
Wise—Today, Virginia Humanities at UVA Wise announced a new grant opportunity for museums, historic sites, libraries, and other cultural non-profits in Southwest Virginia.
Organizations can apply for awards up to $5,000 for projects including book or film discussion programs, community history projects, oral histories, conferences and symposia, curriculum resources for K-12 classroom use, exhibits, festivals and more.
The announcement of the new opportunity follows a press release announcing more than $32,000 in grants to seven Southwest Virginia nonprofits in June.
“We’re thrilled to be offering this second round of funding,” said Jinny Turman who co-directs the regional humanities center. “The first round included an array of exciting new projects and events. It’s been encouraging to see that our area’s cultural and historical institutions are working so hard to help members of their communities share their stories and culture with the wider world.”
To be eligible, applicants must be located within one of the nine counties which define the Virginia Humanities at UVA Wise service area:
- Buchanan
- Dickenson
- Lee
- Russell
- Scott
- Smyth
- Tazewell
- Washington
- Wise
The deadline to apply is July 31. More information and details on how to apply are available at RegionalCenters.VirginiaHumanities.org/uva-wise.

About Virginia Humanities
Virginia Humanities is the state humanities council. We’re headquartered in Charlottesville at the University of Virginia, but we serve the entire state. We aim to share the stories of all Virginians—or, better yet, find ways for people to share their own stories. We want Virginians to connect with their history and culture and, in doing that, we hope we’ll all get to know each other a little better. Founded in 1974, we are one of fifty-six humanities councils created by Congress with money and support from the National Endowment for the Humanities to make the humanities available to all Americans.
